Perspective of Rethinking towards Existing World
Since the birth of human civilization, homosapiens have been developing human society in a similar pattern, conquering badlands within nature, in search for a better Utopia. These similar patterns and structures which appeared within different eras, has created a dynamic thought which consist of an observation between macroscopic to microscopic within a linear timeline, or to be specific, a place which involve in a historic timeline.
The Progression of Human Society and Civilization
From Wandering beneath Ruins to Searching of Site
Wandering beneath countless ruins, which often involve with detention areas like prisons, asylums and experimental labs, caused by the passion on Power Relations by Foucault, has led me into the discovery of detention islands in Malaysia. By doing several premier research, a relation tied with Leprosy between the detention islands, which has existed since the British Empire era has been discovered. Sungai Buloh Leprosy Settlement, which has the most complex system within the detention areas, has been selected as the site to further research and discuss in this project.

Research on origin of Leprosy leading towards the development of Leprosy Settlement
Sungai Buloh Leprosy Settlement, is one of the earliest experimental detention areas for Leprosy in Malaysia, built by the British Empire to isolate Leprosy patients from civilians 100 years ago. The planning framework of detention has changed to a more humanly structure, inspired by the Garden City, compared to the prison-like detention islands of the past. By constructing a self-sufficient community and providing paradise-like living conditions for the patients, the experiment process has successfully proved that Leprosy is an extremely low infection rate disease, and yet has carried out efficient treatments for patients all around the world, putting an end to Leprosy fear.
Cognition of Site
After doing several months of field operations and paper research, a dynamic society far more complex than a simple detention area was unearthed. On the premise of having a built environment and multiracial populated community, the patients have developed places for religious, culture and social activity within the settlement, to fulfil the complicated needs of different communities. Throughout the years, with the relaxed policy of detention, the community even developed nursery cultivation, in exchange of currency with civilians outside of the settlement, which continues to this day.
Existing & Potential Site Problems
But after the elimination of detention policies in 1969, the settlement has ceased to contain new patients ever since, which had led to aging and decaying of the community. Decreasing population and lack of proper management on settlement has led to abandon of massive chalets, which caused illegal housing and cultivation issues, resulted in a decision to demolish 1/4 of the site in 2007 for future purposes. Locals and protesters noticed the demolition of a UNESCO potential historical site and managed to stop further demolish plans, which sparked a discussion towards the future of the settlement.
Potential Strategy & Site Programs
Mapping of Preserved Elements & Site Interpretation
From Mapping to Defining Design Area
Three-phased Site Plannings Suggestions
To provide a sustainable future for the settlement, new programs to help on reconstructing the site functionality and facilities has to be planned. Thus, a historical-medical park which focus on rehabilitation and hospice, accompanied by productive nursery cultivation as circular economy source, is introduced as the master plan. A three-phased rework progress is suggested to provide a low impact long-term project towards the decaying settlement, focusing on different task during each phase.
From Conflicts to Solutions to Site Selection
Phase one of the suggested plannings is focused on this project to provide an advanced experimental design. By doing mapping on the collected data of field operations, considering the important elements & interpretations of the settlement, 4 potential sites are selected to introduce new programs to the site. Each of these selected sites contain a major unique role in the settlement which each represents current conflicts, but through a rework progress, a mutualism field could be formed.
